For test takers: IELTS Strategy Masterclass

The reference deck every IELTS student gets. 31 slides, all four papers, the traps and the fixes.
Slide 9 of 31, Listening

How IELTS tricks you: the distractors

The first answer trap
"Let's meet at 7:00... actually, make it half past."
Answer: 7:30. Speakers correct themselves.
Listen for: actually, well no, I mean, on second thought, wait.
The all options mentioned trap
"We could take the bus, or the train... but driving would be fastest."
Only driving is the answer.
Listen for the conclusion, not the first thing said.
The synonym swap trap
Question says constructed. Audio says built.
IELTS never uses the same word.
Train in synonyms: decrease = decline = drop = fall = reduce.

For professionals: Presenting a Proposal

A real lesson for a workplace English student, 60 minutes. Recommending, persuading, and asking for a decision.

1. Offer it
I'd like to recommend. What I'm proposing is.
You put it on the table. They can still say no.
recomMEND, stress on the last syllable. proPOSing, stress second.
2. Show the payoff
The benefits of this approach are. If we were to... we could. This would result in.
The consequence, not the opinion. Proposals are won here.
"were to" weakens to /wətə/. COULD has no l sound.
3. Back it
I strongly believe.
Your weight behind it. Use it once. Twice and it stops counting.
STRONGly beLIEVE. Falls at the end. Suggesting and insisting do not sound the same.
